About a year ago I gave up using products that weren't natural. Now, as a self confessed hoarder, I can't explain the amount of black binbags full of old products I got rid of. It was part of a decision (inspired by my sister) to live more consciously, live less in a consumerist bubble and to care for my body both on the inside and out. When I then started researching the impact of what is in most of these products- think parabens, fluoride- I was shocked at the impact they can have on our health (especially for us women and hormones).
Now, I can tell you this: I have tried more products that any one ever (that's a fact lol). But seriously, I have had bad skin, combination skin- and other internal health problems- all that I have tried every remedy for in the book. Having been toying with the idea (but scared of jumping into the world of natural deodorant + possible smelly armpits lol) one day, I just decided to just take the plunge. It took a few weeks for my body to adjust to the cold turkey option I went with, but after that: it began it settle.
Now my skin care regime consists of a konjac sponge (nothing on it, just that), Sukin clean greens moisturiser for my face, and a coconut oil mix I make for my body and evening facial routine. Yes, I get small hormonal break outs but otherwise, my skin is the most balanced it has ever been. (In fact, I went to get a facial treatment the other day and forgot to bring my own moisturiser. Before I could tell her to stop, she had slathered my face in something perfumed- two days later I have had a mini break out).
I think what we forget, is that with food, products- everything- our bodies are made to work for us. But somewhere between advertising, the beauty industry and diet industry (and the patriarchy- sorry it had to be said lol) we lost our ability to trust ourselves and the body's ability to work itself out yo!
So anyway, to start you off on a natural journey (if you so wish) here is my recipe for a beautifully fragrant and soothing foot scrub. Soak in the bath, then use this natural beauty to soften those tootsies after a long day. The dried rose petals then float in the bath and make you fee like the princess you are.
1/2 cup caster sugar
1/4 cup himalyan salt (finely ground)
1/4 cup rose water (if you're vegan make sure you check the one you get is)
1/4 cup olive oil (I use basil infused- normal works, but it gives a different depth of smell)
1/4 cup corn flour
2-3 drops of peppermint oil (make sure it is suitable for use on skin)
1/8 cup bicarbonate soda
Sprinkling of dried rose petals
1. Mix the flour and bicarb together ensuring there are no lumps.
2. Mix the sugar, salt and oil together in a separate bowl.
3. Add the rose water and stir.
4. Add in the dry mix, and drops of peppermint (do 1 at a time as strengths of product vary and it can overpower the subtle basil and rose). Mix till combined.
5. Add the rose petals.
6. Store in an airtight, sterilised jar.
